Weigh Etude, 2013

Weight Etude is a kinesthetic study about weight and mass, heaviness and lightness. The project was done as a part of the MA programme in choreography at Theatre Academy and the main focus was in composition. In this piece Huhtakallio was interested in investigating the idea of how to tune or excite the space. Her goal was to follow the founded logic of moving and to try to listen for how it resonates in the acoustic and visual reality of a space. She was very inspired by Martin Heidegger's philosophy and his concept of being-with. Huhtakallio found out that instead of brutally inventing something, all she had to do was to realize what was already there, follow and listen, and then form from that.

Huhtakallio's interest in music in a broader sense was also present in this project. She recorded different clusters, playing the piano with with whole body. The idea was to let the mass of the body be heard. After all, piano is just an instrument that one plays utilizing weight and the force of  gravity the same way as in dance, only the framing being different. Music is present as an equal party, formulated through the
same logic as the whole piece.
